When you receive a TMJ massage, your therapist will release the muscles of mastication: masseters, temporalis, medial and lateral pterygoids. TMJ massage can include intra oral work if permission is given by the patient. To do this, your therapist will wear gloves while massaging muscles inside the mouth. Other areas included are the face, neck, base of the skull and shoulders. Methods used throughout the massage can include Neuromuscular therapy (NMT), Active Release Therapy (ART), Myofascial Therapy and Static Stretching for muscles in the neck.
Self guided massage for the muscles of mastication: masseters, temporalis, medial pterygoid, lateral pterygoid, the sternocleidomastoid (SCM), muscles that make up the floor of the mouth and under the front side of the neck. Methods taught throughout the massage can include Neuromuscular therapy (NMT), Active Release Therapy (ART), Myofascial Therapy and Static Stretching for muscles in the neck. Please see the TMJology section for more information
For patients suffering from TMJ pain due to muscle dysfunction. When some muscles are stronger than others, it can lead to physical issues like limited range of motion, injuries, and additional stress on other areas of the body. Muscle imbalances can be caused by overuse from repetitive movements, injuries, or poor posture.
During the program we will address the muscles that support the TMJ, along with the muscles of the neck, face and the tongue. After completing the 90-minute initial evaluation we will meet weekly over 4 weeks with each session lasting between 30-45 minutes.
This is not myofunctional therapy! When you have completed the 4-week program, there will be a chance that you do need to complete a full myofunctional therapy program. At the end, if a full myofunctional therapy program is needed to address other OMDs (orofacial myofunctional disorders), the money you spent for this program, will be deducted from the total cost of your remaining therapy.
Myofunctional Therapy, also known as Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy, is a specialized intervention designed to address Oral Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs). Therapy involves a regimen of therapeutic oral and facial muscle exercises that are suited to the individual patient’s needs. The exercises are designed to develop correct chewing and swallowing patterns, along with improving the resting postures of the tongue and lips. Oral Myofunctional Disorders may affect breastfeeding, growth of the facial skeleton, swallowing, chewing, jaw and dental occlusion, oral hygiene, stability of orthodontic treatment, temporomandibular joint movement, and more.
I was struggling with jaw pain, frequent jaw locking, ear pain, and daily headaches as I prepared for a tongue tie release. Living in a rural area in the mountains, I was unsure how to find the help I needed—until I found Jessica and her company, Uniquely You Massage. Her virtual self-guided massage session for TMJD and the floor of the mouth was an absolute game changer. Jessica taught me techniques to release the tension in the muscles of my head, jaw, tongue, and floor of the mouth. I now have the tools and techniques to help alleviate the pain and tension I had been experiencing daily. My range of motion has improved, allowing me to open my jaw wider, and I feel much more prepared for my tongue tie release and the rehab process. If you're dealing with TMJD, facial pain, or a tongue tie I highly recommend Jessica and Uniquely You Massage! Jessica is a wealth of knowledge and her passion shines through in her treatment. Also, I did not have a headache today! Which is so so rare for me right now. Thank you for EVERYTHING. For looking at me with a myo lens too. I really appreciated it and loved getting to learn from you and chat some.
Today I had the pleasure of working with Jessica from Uniquely You massage. To say that it was incredible would be an understatement. I thought already having been through myofunctional therapy and a tongue tie release, I would not see big changes. I saw big changes such as my tongue having even more mobility and my jaw having even more range of motion I was BEYOND impressed with Jessica’s program, as well as her knowledge of the TMJ. This was all done virtually. Her techniques help you find areas that you didn’t even know needed releasing.
If you are having any jaw pain, waking up with headaches, trouble opening wide, Jessica is the person you want to see. She is very thorough and tells you everything as you are going along.
I would highly recommend Jessica for your TMJ issues and tongue tie massage!
You will not be disappointed.
Jess at Uniquely You Massage does amazing work. I've been grinding my teeth at night and unfortunately clenching my teeth during stressful times. It has led to a lot of painful headaches, jaw soreness, and inner ear pressure. Jess takes her time to listen to my needs and provides so much helpful education and suggestions. Her massages are both pampering and therapeutic. She makes sure to communicate everything that is happening during my massage and makes sure that I am comfortable at all times. I know that I am in good hands and can put my mind at ease. It is so rare to find a caregiver that is willing to be so patient and work with you as a partner.
I had the absolute pleasure of working with Jessica, and I can not recommend her enough! She brought depth of understanding and empathy to my session, making me feel confident, heard, and supported throughout. From start to finish, Jessica guides you through a seamless and enjoyable experience, addressing every concern with care and compassion. Her dedication to the process is truly inspiring, and her wealth of knowledge is invaluable. Jessica is a true gem, and I feel grateful to have been able to do this.
I only did a short month long program with Jess, but in that month, I've learned so much about my body that I would have never picked up on my own!
Using massage and several remote sessions of instruction, Jess taught a good bit about proper tongue posture. Jess recommended targeted exercises to address the specific instabilities and weakness in my tongue. She also helped me realize several bad habits I have, and gave techniques to address those.
I have lots of work ahead of me, but I'd never have been able to start without the invaluable information and experience Jess has provided!
